A spike train is a list of event times. Firing rate counts events per time window; changing window width changes temporal detail. Temporal coding can use precise timing even when average rates match. Population activity compares many neurons, so record neuron identities, units and trial boundaries before aggregating.
Worked example
Spikes at 0.1, 0.3 and 0.9 seconds give three spikes in a one-second window, or 3 Hz. A shorter window reveals when those spikes occurred.
