Genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, imaging and physiology measure different aspects of a system. Combining modalities requires matching samples, time points and units. Missing modalities are often nonrandom; a complete-case analysis may exclude a clinically important subgroup. More features do not guarantee a better model when sample size is small.
Worked example
Before joining an expression table to imaging features, check unique patient IDs and visit dates. An inner join that removes 40% of patients can change the target population.
